It's the subtle imperfections of Zellige tile that make this material both remarkable and the perfect choice for those seeking a truly handmade ceramic tile for their next project.
Each piece of Zellige tile (traditionally known as “zellij”) is made today in much the same fashion it was some 1300 years ago in Southern Spain and Morocco. Starting with a simple mixture of local clay and water, tile craftsmen (known as maâlems), begin by hand forming and sun drying basic tile shapes in the arid Moroccan climate. Cured tiles are then glazed and fired methodically in earthen outdoor kilns, a process that further develops variations in color, texture and shine you see within each batch. We emphasize that no two pieces of Zellige tile are ever exactly alike; this is the inherent character of Zellige, this is why it is a beautiful tile.
